Dear Singers
I appreciate all your hard work at home. It really shows. This is not an easy program. Actually Siskiyou Singers doesn’t seem to do easy programs–I guess that’s my fault.🙂
New Seating
The reason we do the mixed seating is because the sound of the choir noticeably improves immediately when we are in the new configuration. Choral musicians actually hear their parts in relation to the other parts, whether they are aware of it or not. When adequately prepared, hearing the other parts better improves balance, improves blend, and definitely improves intonation.
I have already heard some moderate panic about being yanked away from your section. You need to realize that you will not be all by yourself. I work hard to create a situation in which each person is able to hear the other parts well but is also in contact with their own section. As one person said, though, this is certainly motivation to really know your part.
On time and focused
It does make a difference when everyone is ready to go on time. Being in place and ready, with conversations completed, shows respect for the group and every member. The old musician’s saw is “If you are 15 minutes you are on time and if you are on time you are late.” As a choral musician you probably don’t need as much prep time, but at least 5 minutes early makes great sense. Not only do you help the choir but you also help yourself.
See you Tuesday!
