Dear Singers
The recording sounded wonderful. Thank you for all your hard work! It is worth it when we can make such beautiful music!
Understanding what you are singing about is important
It does make a difference that you know what you are singing about! In fact, I think it is great to write the translation into your score–that’s what I do. The translation of the Chichester is on the first page of the score. It is lined up with the original Hebrew. Here is the translation of the Gloria. (I have crossed out the sections which we are not singing)
Glória in excélsis Deo
et in terra pax homínibus bonæ voluntátis.
grátias ágimus tibi propter magnam glóriam tuam,
Dómine Fili Unigénite, Iesu Christe,
Dómine Deus, Agnus Dei, Fílius Patris,
qui tollis peccáta mundi, miserére nobis;
qui tollis peccáta mundi, súscipe deprecatiónem nostram.
Quóniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dóminus,
tu solus Altíssimus,Iesu Christe,
cum Sancto Spíritu, in glória Dei Patris. Amen.[12]

Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will.
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Father.Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of The Father,
you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;
For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Some notes…
Notes
Vivaldi 1
-
Excellent recording!
Bernstein 1
-
Nice job soloists!
-
Cutoffs are very important in the first 10 measures: m2 on 3rd beat, m 6 on 1st beat, m 8 on 2+
-
h’s with a dot underneath should have a heavier “h” sound than normal. Therefore, “sha-Har”
-
Practice conducting DUH duh DUH duh DUH duh duh
-
m22: we have removed the grace note
-
“a-nah-nu” = “a – naH- hu”
-
Tenors: mm 24, 26; Altos: mm 50, 52 – you are all alone. Be very strong!
-
Sopranos, Tenors: Review finding the note m 109
-
Basses, Altos: mm 114-115. “do” and “nai” come on the downbeats
Vivaldi 7
-
“Jesu” = Yeh-Zoo
-
mm 40 – 53 please review!
It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
-
Sounds great!
-
Make sure “la la la” is done with the jaw still and the vocal space open.
-
Tenors, Basses, mm 165-175: Drop the “r” in “wonderful”. The “r” naturally slows one down.
Silent Night
-
Sopranos: some hacks for mm 56 – 70
-
“silent nigh—-twon-drous…”
-
m 61: cutoff on 3
-
m 62: Drop the “ng” of sing– “sih–Al-le-lu-ia”
-
Make sure that “Al-le-lu-ia” has big round vowels and the “l” does not color the vowel. In fact, if you have trouble with this section, drop the l’s altogether and just sing the vowels.
